We offer here a variety of 20th- and 21st-century essays that originally appeared in publications accompanying exhibitions sponsored by museums, galleries, and other commercial and noncommercial enterprises. (See also our Monograph Introductions selection; the distinction between these two grows increasingly murky in the last quarter of the 20th century.)
Commissioned variously by curators, gallerists and others, sometimes including the artists themselves, they represent appreciations but not always critiques of the works and artists they discuss. We've arranged them in loose thematic clusters, according to the author's last name.
