|
John Stathatos was born in Athens, Greece in 1947. He studied philosophy and political science at the London School of Economics, and has been partly based in London since 1969. During the Seventies he was, among other things, a freelance foreign correspondent specialising in third-world conflict; his photographs and reportage from Kurdistan, the Spanish Sahara, and the Philippines, among other places, were published in the London Times, the Sunday Times, the Guardian and many other newspapers and magazines.
In the Eighties he concentrated on his personal photographic work, which has since been widely exhibited in Europe. He also began to write about photography, contributing to Creative Camera, European Photography, Portfolio and a number of visual art publications. In 1993 he co-founded the British arts magazine Untitled, which he edited until 1998.
As a freelance curator, he has curated exhibitions for various institutions including the Arts Council of England, the PhotographerÕs Gallery, the Greek Ministry of Culture, and the Thessaloniki Museum of Photography; major projects have included the 3rd Israeli Photography Biennale and the influential survey exhibition Image & Icon: The New Greek Photography, which toured to the UK, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Canada. In 2002 he organised the first annual Photographic Encounters on the Greek island of Kythera, where he currently lives for part of the year.
