Thomas Harrop, M.S.

Beginning in the early 1980s, Thom Harrop worked as managing editor or editorial director at various national photography publications. These included Peterson's Photographic, Outdoor Photographer, Collector's Photography and Camera & Darkroom (formerly Darkroom Photography).

During his tenure at these magazines Harrop had the opportunity to work with many of the luminaries of photography, including A. D. Coleman, Dean Collins, Ralph Gibson, George Lepp, David Muench, Helmut Newton, Chris Rainier, Galen Rowell, John Sexton, Art Wolfe, and many others.

In addition to magazine work in this editorial role, Harrop has worked throughout his career as a photographer. While working as a full-time photographer for NASA at Edwards Air Force Base in California he photographed for the space shuttle program, the X-29 program, the Voyager (the plane that flew around the world non-stop and unrefueled), and the Daedulus program (which led to the first man-powered flight from Crete to the Greek mainland).

Along with science- and technology-related imagery, Harrop has photographed many celebrities for publication, including A. J. Foyt, Joe Sakic, Morgan Fairchild, Charlton Heston, Ming-Na Wen, Dennis Weaver, Patty Loveless, Benjamin Netanyahu, Jack Nicklaus, and Steffi Graf.

Over the years Harrop has published more than 120 magazine articles, along with hundreds of his photos. These publications have run the gamut of publications from Time and U.S.A. Today to Horizon Air magazine, Outdoor Photographer, PC Laptop, PhotoPro, Golf Tips, and Place & Pilot.

Harrop received both bachelor's and master's degrees from the Brooks Institute of Photography, and is currently pursuing a doctorate in education. He teaches photography and computing at the Art Institute of Colorado.
