In this section of Motion,
we present an ongoing series of first-person travel
narratives by notable voyagers from the near and distant
past. Some will be well-known, others unfamiliar and
perhaps even anonymous. What distinguishes them all,
we believe, is the zest and energy with which they tell
their tales of adventures large and small.
Our first offering comes from
one Sarah Kemble Knight, an apparently fearless and
forthright Bostonian woman of independent mind, a widow
who almost three centuries ago saddled up and rode to
New York City and back to settle legal matters relating
to her family estate.
