In September of 2012 I initiated a series of posts that, collectively, I titled “Election 2012: Image World,” in which I addressed the imagistic components of Barack Obama’s second run for the White House. Since most of the election-related imagery came in lens-derived form — still photos and videos — this seemed an appropriate subject for critical analysis at this photo-centric blog.
I followed that up with Election 2016: Image World, an equally long series of posts that I kicked off in late July of 2015. I skipped the 2020 election, but I’ve decided to throw my photo-critical hat into the ring once more on this subject, and to do so even earlier this time around. With Nikki Haley’s February 2023 announcement of her candidacy the 2024 campaign officially started. And the imagery that will affect this election has already begun to emerge. So the time is right for Image World: Election 2024.
You’ll find my running commentary via the links below, in reverse chronological order, the most recent first.
•
Election 2024: Image World 4 (November 7, 2023): In which I describe casting my first vote in my new electoral district, sketch the shenanigans of my new hometown’s Republican leadership, and weigh the corruption of the mainstream media in its relation this election.
Election 2024: Image World 3 (September 10, 2023): In which I analyze in detail the mug shot of Donald J. Trump made at the Fulton County Jail in Atlanta, Georgia during the course of his arrest on August 24, 2023, and the mug shots of his accomplices in crime.
Election 2024: Image World 2 (May 23, 2023): In which I anticipate the historic mug shot(s) to come, acknowledge the ongoing visual presence of porn star Stormy Daniels in the imagistic environment of the campaign, and note the emergence of the delicious “pudding fingers” meme.
Election 2024: Image World 1 (February 25, 2023): In which I predict what I foresee as the primary imagistic threads of the nascent campaigns, weigh the visual components of Joe Biden’s State of the Union address and surprise visit to Ukraine, and evaluate the potency of the “Dark Brandon” meme.
