Growing Up
by Earl Coleman

Where I grew up
the winter snows were fifteen feet
but I lay warm and buried
in the bedbug sheet

Where I grew up
there was a mild depression in our house
but working in the luncheonette
I dove for pearls

Where I grew up
we spent our somber moments
waiting for the other shoe to drop,
when we had shoes

Where I grew up
we didn’t think to save
our pennies from the milk deposit bottles,
never contemplating so much rain.
