| The Market Diner Bash, a unique event in the history of photography, took place on Sunday evening, May 14, 1972, in New York City. At the Bash, conceived and hosted by photographer Neal Slavin and critic/historian A. D. Coleman, more than 50 members of the then-burgeoning U.S. photo scene gathered to photograph each other. Slavin and Coleman curated the resulting images into an exhibition that took place the following fall.
This now-legendary project constitutes a time capsule of contemporary photography in the early 1970s — just before the "photo boom" erupted to push the medium to the forefront of cultural attention, and just prior to the advent of postmodernism, "photo-based art," and other art-world phenomena.
Now, almost four decades later, Slavin and Coleman have decided to revisit the event — by reconstituting the original show, re-contacting the participants, and staging a reunion. The Nearby Café is pleased to serve as the online collection point for all these materials and activities.
